Hoje tem Bacon extra: The Bacon Brothers

Na televisão, também protagonizou séries como The Following, City on a Hill e The Bondsman.

Folk, rock, soul e country.

O repertório combina guitarras elétricas, arranjos acústicos, harmonias vocais e referências à tradição musical americana, incluindo a soul music que marcou a Filadélfia.

Essa liberdade aparece ao longo de uma discografia que inclui Getting There (1999), Can’t Complain (2001), White Knuckles (2005), The Way We Love (2020) e Ballad of the Brothers (2024).

Ballad of the Brothers: música sem receita pronta

Lançado em abril de 2024, Ballad of the Brothers apresenta diferentes aspectos da sonoridade dos irmãos.

Ballad of the Brothers (2024)

E Kevin resolveu entrar no jogo!

People in the World: uma canção sobre conexões humanas

A composição dialoga com referências como We Are the World e People Got to Be Free, dos Rascals.

Extra Bacon Today: The Bacon Brothers

If you’ve been following Rocksy, you’ve probably noticed that we have a few passions: movies, music, food, and good stories.

And today, we’re serving up all four!

But we’re not talking about breakfast. We’re talking about Kevin and Michael Bacon, two brothers who turned a shared family passion for music into a creative partnership that has lasted more than three decades.

Now, doesn’t that sound delicious?

Kevin needs little introduction to anyone who grew up watching Footloose (1984), the movie in which he proved he could dance — and how!

He went on to appear in productions such as A Few Good Men (1992), Apollo 13 (1995), and Mystic River (2003).

On television, he has also starred in series including The Following, City on a Hill, and The Bondsman.

But while Hollywood was getting to know Kevin’s acting talents, he was nurturing another passion: music.

And in this story, he shares the spotlight with his older brother Michael, an Emmy-winning composer known for his work in film and television.

Together, they are The Bacon Brothers, a band that blends folk, rock, soul, and country into a catalog of original compositions, personal stories, and influences drawn from American musical traditions.

Music Runs in the Family

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kevin and Michael grew up in a family that valued the arts.

Their father, Edmund Bacon, was a prominent architect and urban planner. Their mother, Ruth Hilda Bacon, encouraged her children’s cultural interests, introducing them to music, dance, and theater from an early age.

Michael, nine years older than Kevin, chose music as his profession. He performed with folk-rock groups, developed his own projects, and established a career composing music for film and television.

Kevin pursued acting but never abandoned his instruments or songwriting.

Although the brothers had played music together since their youth, their professional partnership began taking shape after a charity performance in Philadelphia in 1994.

The following year, they officially formed The Bacon Brothers.

Their debut album, Forosoco, arrived in 1997.

Forosoco: Four Genres, One Musical Identity

Folk, rock, soul, and country.

These four genres inspired the word forosoco, a term coined by the brothers to describe their musical blend.

Their repertoire combines electric guitars, acoustic arrangements, vocal harmonies, and references to American musical traditions, including the soul music that helped define Philadelphia’s musical identity.

Michael brings his experience as a composer and instrumentalist, while Kevin frequently develops his songs through stories, characters, and personal experiences.

Rather than creating obstacles, their differences help shape the band’s musical identity.

In their official biography, the brothers describe how their different approaches to songwriting have become an important part of their creative partnership.

Instead of trying to fit every composition into a predetermined formula, they allow each song to suggest its own instrumentation and arrangements.

That freedom runs throughout a discography that includes Getting There (1999), Can’t Complain (2001), White Knuckles (2005), The Way We Love (2020), and Ballad of the Brothers (2024).

Ballad of the Brothers: Music Without a Fixed Recipe

Released in April 2024, Ballad of the Brothers showcases different aspects of the brothers’ musical personalities.

While preparing the album, Kevin and Michael collaborated with songwriters in Nashville, a city internationally recognized for its country music heritage.

Their collaborators included Casey Beathard, Brett Tyler, and Kimberly Kelly.

Recording sessions took place in different American locations and involved musicians from a variety of backgrounds.

Live With The Lie, recorded in New Jersey, was tracked without a click track, allowing the band to preserve the natural feel of the performance.

Meanwhile, Take Off This Tattoo developed a new identity after being handed to Travis Bacon, Kevin’s son.

Travis introduced rock and electronic elements into the production, transforming a song that had originally leaned toward country.

And that’s where one of the album’s most entertaining recording stories comes in.

Kevin recalled asking fiddle player Brian Fitzgerald to imagine he was playing an electric guitar, even though he was holding a fiddle.

The result was a solo quite different from what listeners might expect in a traditional country recording.

The experience illustrates the brothers’ willingness to experiment without worrying too much about musical boundaries.

When Stories Become Songs

In Old Bronco, Kevin turns his 1969 Ford Bronco into a humorous metaphor for aging.

Airport Bar uses an airport bar as the setting for a story about a troubled relationship.

The title track of Ballad of the Brothers, meanwhile, tells a story inspired by the mythology of the American Wild West.

Michael found inspiration in Gruene Hall, a historic Texas dance hall, and in the storytelling traditions associated with musicians such as Charlie Daniels.

The song follows two characters from the American East Coast who find themselves in a Texas honky-tonk and discover unexpected musical abilities.

These stories reveal an important characteristic of The Bacon Brothers: their songwriting isn’t limited to autobiographical experiences.

There’s room for fictional characters, family memories, everyday observations, and humorous situations.

Throughout their career, the band has also performed at celebrated American venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, and Gruene Hall in Texas.

From Music to Giving Back

The Bacon Brothers’ connection to Philadelphia goes beyond childhood memories and musical influences.

In November 2022, the band released Philly Thing, a collaboration with Rock to the Future, a nonprofit organization that provides music education to children and teenagers in the city.

The song brought together Kevin Bacon and young musician Naheim Gaymon-Hill, who contributed a rap verse.

The project also connects with SixDegrees.org, a charitable organization founded by Kevin in 2007.

And there’s another story behind that name.

Six Degrees of Separation — and One Good Idea

Have you ever heard of the six degrees of separation?

The idea suggests that any two people in the world can be connected through a chain of no more than six personal relationships.

In the 1990s, three American college students decided to turn that concept into a game involving Kevin Bacon.

The result was Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, a game in which players try to connect any actor to Kevin through movies and shared cast members.

For example, one actor appeared in a movie with another, who worked with a third actor, who eventually appeared alongside Kevin Bacon.

Each connection represents one degree of separation.

The game became so popular that it eventually found a permanent place in American pop culture.

And Kevin decided to join the game!

In 2007, he founded SixDegrees.org, a nonprofit organization that uses the idea of human connections to encourage generosity and support social initiatives.

The organization develops projects involving young people, education, and community empowerment.

After all, if everyone is only a few steps away from Kevin Bacon, why not use those connections to do something good?

Music also became part of that mission.

Beyond Philly Thing, the partnership with Rock to the Future helped support new music education initiatives in Philadelphia.

In 2025, SixDegrees.org announced Ruth’s Room, a project honoring Kevin and Michael’s mother.

Its first location was designed to provide young people in Philadelphia with a dedicated space for musical creativity, including recording and performance facilities.

The brothers’ connection to their hometown, therefore, remains present not only in their compositions but also in their community projects.

People in the World: A Song About Human Connection

In October 2025, The Bacon Brothers released People in the World, a collaboration with fellow Philadelphia singer Mare.

Written by Michael, the song explores solidarity and human relationships, drawing inspiration from the tradition of humanitarian musical anthems.

Its influences include songs such as We Are the World and The Rascals’ People Got to Be Free.

The idea came from something Michael often said when people complimented the band: the world needed more people like those who showed appreciation for their music.

That simple thought eventually became a song, developing through additional lyrics and evolving into a duet with Mare.

For anyone who first discovered Kevin Bacon through Footloose, perhaps the most interesting surprise lies in the songs he writes and performs alongside his brother.

What a musical treat!
